Senior Sensory Scientist – Fragrance/Flavor Manufacturing

Our client is an award winning fragrance and flavor manufacturer with HQ based NW of Chicago, IL. Based on continued growth, they are looking to hire an experienced Senior Sensory Scientist. The Senior Sensory Scientist is responsible for customer excellence by leading a variety platform to ensure Company Fragrances meet customer/consumer requirements. This role will also serve as the internal descriptive expert, train junior staff on the descriptive training program, and cross train in flavors by establishing a flavor descriptive panel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead Fragrance Sensory & Consumer core projects, including: objective setting, research design, data analysis and interpretation, report creation, result communication to internal/external customers, and timeline management.

  • Identify root causes of fragrance quality concerns and implement preventive protocols.

  • Conduct shelf life studies for fragrances and final product performance under various conditions.

  • Assist (as needed) in study preparation including: Compusense file creation, cup labeling, and sample preparation/portioning.

  • Work collaboratively with cross functional internal and customer teams: R&D, Marketing, Sales, QC, Evaluation, and Procurement.

  • Cross train in Flavors by building and maintaining a Flavor Descriptive Panel for Sweet/Beverage categories, including: panelist recruitment, training, performance monitoring, and remedial training.


  • Must have at least a BS Degree in Food Science or Sensory Science or similar science (examples: biology, physiology, psychology, statistics, consumer science, cognitive behavior etc). Master’s Degree in Sensory Science is a plus.

  • Must have at least 5-7 years of Sensory work experience. Fragrance or Flavor Sensory experience is preferred.

  • Must have experienced in conducting and applying appropriate statistical analysis for a variety of Sensory methodologies for: Descriptive Analysis, Discrimination Testing, and Product Based Consumer Research.

  • Should have experience in training and monitoring Spectrum or QDA Descriptive panels. Preference to those who excel at creating new descriptive panels.

  • Must have working knowledge of Windows based software (i.e. Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office). Experience with R software is a plus.

  • Experience with Compusense software preferred.

  • Must be articulate and discriminate a variety of flavor and aroma stimuli.

  • Should have strong problem solving skills and able to organization and pay attention to details.

  • Strong verbal and written communication are a must.

  • Must be self-motivated, have strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to balance multiple priorities and multi task.
