Our client is a rapidly growing FLAVOR Nutritional Ingredient Manufacturer based in the Ames, IA. The Assistant Purchasing Manager/Senior Buyer will be responsible for sourcing raw materials, packaging materials, goods and services and actively managing vendors. The successful candidate will be able to perform strategic procurement activities across multiple categories and implement leveraging techniques to reduce raw material costs at this location.


  • Develop, lead and execute proven purchasing strategies

  • Track and report key functional performance metrics to reduce expenses and improve effectiveness

  • Craft negotiation strategies and close deals with optimal terms

  • Partner with stakeholders to ensure a clear understanding of requirements and supply required documentation

  • Forecast price and market trends to identify opportunities for the company

  • Educate the commercial team on market trends and possible opportunities

  • Perform cost and scenario analysis, and benchmarking

  • Assess, manage and mitigate risks in alignment with direction from senior management of the company

  • Seek and partner with reliable vendors and suppliers

  • Evaluate total performance of all suppliers and implement continuous improvement programs to constantly upgrade vendor base

  • Determine quantity and timing of deliveries

  • Monitor and forecast upcoming levels of demand

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must have at least a BA/BS degree

  • Must have at least 3 years of purchasing experience

  • Prefer candidates that have food, ingredients, flavor, chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturing experience

  • Preferred familiarity with sourcing and vendor management in the flavor or specialty food ingredient industry

  • Understanding of the regulatory environment of an FDA regulated business

  • Experience purchasing a variety of specialty raw materials or other similar raw materials

  • A demonstrated interest in tracking market dynamics

  • Proven skills in negotiation and networking

  • Working experience with vendor management software

  • Ability to gather and analyze data and to work from a data based approach

  • Solid judgement along with decision making skills

  • Strong leadership capabilities
