One of the largest and well respected specialty ingredient manufacturers of gums, hydrocolloids and formulated gums systems are growing again and they are seeking to fill a key position - Director of R&D. This position is based in the Northeast and will manage the R&D group.     

SUMMARY:  To conduct basic and innovative research and development programs on hydrocolloids; lead and manage the development of intellectual property; innovate new gum systems and assist in the design aspect of manufacturing and large-scale production of gums and gum systems. This position provides leadership and management of the R&D department in order to accomplish strategic business goals.   

RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:   

1.      To plan and execute the innovation, basic research and development programs of both Applications and Innovations in support of and in alignment with the strategic business goals of the organization. 

2.      To manage the development of new products and to assist the Manufacturing Department in its initial phases of production. 

3.      To participate in the implementation of the Design element in the ISO 9001-certified quality system and assume specific responsibilities related to its planning and execution.  

4.      To extend technical help to other departments (Customer Service, Sales, Quality Control, Marketing etc.) and to individual and potential customers.  

5.      To direct the Applications and Innovations technical projects for customers; to design, present, and manage R&D’s customer presentations. 

6.      To be a Strategic Account Member as required.  

7.      To give technical presentations at national seminars and training programs as well as publish technical articles reviewed by peers. 

8.      To extend technical assistance to the Purchasing Department in the evaluation of new raw material sources. 

9.      To assist the Marketing Department in the technical editing of articles for publication. 

10. To stay abreast of current trends, market conditions, and technological advances through continued education.

 11. To perform other duties as assigned.  

12. To follow all company safety rules in performing job duties. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 

• A Ph.D. in Food Science, Organic Chemistry or related field, with an undergraduate in Organic Chemistry/Food Science.
• Ten years of professional experience within the food industry.
• Experience with Gums and Hydrocolloids preferred,
• Five or more years in managing technical personnel and complex activities.
• Post doctoral work can be recognized.
