Senior Food Scientist - Gums & Emulsions

Location: New Jersey

A recognized leader in the manufacturing of hydrocolloids and gums is growing again and they are currently seeking to fill a key R&D position as PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST. This position will focus on Emulsion Technology and be accountable for innovative developments and the support of company product development activities within Applications. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:   

1.       Provide and manage a safe, accident-free laboratory environment. 

2.       Complete assigned projects in a timely fashion using an appropriate experimental design and report status of projects as they progress with a final summary in the company designated data base system.   
 

3.       Supervise the assignment, execution, and completion of projects assigned to Food Chemists.  Responsible for providing guidance to Food Chemists with respect to career advancement in the form of Catalytic Coaching.     

4.       Stay abreast of the developments and the advancement of the underlying science of hydrocolloid materials affecting emulsion and texture development in various food forms.  

5.       Support technical innovative development by actively seeking new applicable technology that is related to core business.  

6.       Contribute to the development of the intellectual property base through the filing of patents, where applicable and practicing good stewardship of our proprietary knowledge and know how.  

7.       Work closely with the QA department to ensure product quality by utilizing TQM, and support our customer requirements. 

8.       Support a collaborative working relationship with all departments.   

9.       Review and recommend approval for SOP’s and ISO-9001 Design-related documents as required; actively participate in the ISO documentation and internal audit.

 10.  Support our applications team with a flow of new common ingredients to Applications. Act as our in-house consultant supporting our applications development team through regular seminars (using guest speakers) and formulation guidance. 

11.  Actively support Sales force and Marketing team.  Publish regularly in several industry journals of varying scientific value trade books through peer reviewed journals.  

12.  Provide training to new personnel and others as required.  

13.  Follow all company safety rules in performing job duties.

14.  Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree in Food Science, Organic Chemistry or related field, a Ph.D. is preferred with an undergraduate in Organic Chemistry/Food Science.
  • A minimum of 5 years professional experience, preferably within the food or a related industry is required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have experience working with EMULSIONS
  • Post doctoral work can be recognized.
  • Ability to think critically and problem solve.
  • Must be able to travel domestically up to 20%
